The brief

Before the Brownlow,inside Crown Towers.

Our brief was to capture the moments before the main event. We photographed the preparations in the players’ dressing rooms at Crown Towers Melbourne: the last adjustments to a suit, a drink poured and a conversation before it was time to leave.

The direction was a fashion editorial. Considered portraits sit beside candid photographs and close details of the clothes and styling. The black-and-white finish brings the shape of the tailoring, the texture of the gowns and the expressions into focus.

Visual State Studio photographed the series in collaboration with JLH Creative, who led creative direction and PR. Every image in this gallery was made before the Brownlow ceremony.

The preparations

Dressing-roommoments.

A bow tie straightened, a cuff fastened, glasses raised. These are the small moments that give the finished portraits their context. The brief made room for them alongside the formal photographs.

The portraits

Portraits,before the red carpet.

Jarman Impey and Brad Hill’s Brownlow photography began in the rooms where they were getting ready. The series moves from portraits together to individual frames and the people sharing the preparations. Crown Towers’ doorways, mirrors and textured walls give each photograph its setting.

Close details and full-length portraits show the styling from different distances. A gathered sleeve, jewellery against dark fabric and the line of a gown each have a place in the story. The finished looks complete the sequence before everyone leaves for the evening.
